So, you're pregnant. Or you're hoping to be soon...
As each day of your pregnancy that passes you realize that you are one day closer to meeting your precious baby and the excitement that you feel is hard to put in words. But sometimes... thoughts of labour and birth pop in your head and all the unknowns are so hard to visualize and comprehend. There are so many decisions to make. Pain meds? No pain meds? Doula? No Doula? Midwife? OB? Home-birth? Water-birth? etc. etc. etc. So many decisions.
Your excitement comes close but doesn't quite out-weigh the growing feelings of fear that seem to be taking over. TV shows and movies have taught you that this will be a pain like no other. An unbearable pain. You might just lose all control. And what if something goes wrong? Then what? More decisions.
But then you remember that one friend that described their birth as being magical and amazing. They must be the exception, right?
Wrong. What if I told you that you can have the birth that you want? Well, you can, and here are some steps to make it happen.
Step 1 - Envision your ideal birth experience - describe every single detail down to the smells that bring you the most comfort.
Step 2 - Gather your team of support people (doulas bring the magic *wink, wink*) and fill them in on your vision!
Step 3 - Get to work! No one said it was going to be easy, but it will be worth it!
Create visualizations of safety and comfort that you can use to focus your thoughts on during labour. Contractions are just waves bringing your baby to shore to meet you! Choose affirmations like the one in the picture above that you can repeat over and over again during labour. Flood your mind with all the things that make you feel like the badass birther you dream of being.
Then PRACTICE. Mediate. Read books. Get all the knowledge you can get your hands on. Ask a Doula for support. We have the answers that you need. Then let all the fears float away.
Step 4 - Bring your baby into the world the way you've imagined. Gently and without fear ❤️
